This great little video popped up on YouTube today depicting the catch and release of a 600-pound blue marlin off the Hatteras coast. The video was shot on an iphone, so it’s not professional by any stretch, but it’s still a great little clip to watch.
We’ve also learned that the fish was taken by the three-man crew of the Waterboy, a 40 Cabo Express that hails out of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Apparently the boat was traveling from Ocean City, Maryland to Beaufort, North Carolina after having departed from Nantucket the day before. According to a blog post on The Hull Truth, the crew dropped “marlin gear off Oregon Inlet and trolled south all day. We ran 8 Rods, all Penn 80 VSW, all with 400 lb Wind On Leaders, ran mostly Beamish Custom Tackle lures and a few Black Barts mixed in, 1 long skirted ballyjoo on the center rigger and a Marauder down deep.” The fish took a Beamish Custom tackle Hydro-Hottie-Green Color Skirt and took just under two hours to boat.
Congratulations to the crew of the Waterboy on a great catch! And thanks for posting the video to YouTube for us to enjoy! Fish On!
