For those of you keeping up with world tuna news from across the Saltwater Nation, there are two stories of interest coming from Asia today.

First, Fishnewseu.com  (a UK commercial fishing news site) is reporting that the Sri Lankan government is finally offering support of the tuna fisheries improvement project (FIP), an important tuna fisheries sustainability project designed to strengthen fishery data collection and processing; enhance monitoring, control and surveillance; and implement a harvest control mechanism. You can learn more about FIP at http://www.sustainablefish.org/fisheries-improvement/tuna/sri-lanka-tuna

Second, IF has just learned that the first bluefin tuna of the season in Pingtun, Taiwan, the southern most county in Taiwan, was sold at auction today for nearly $59,000. The fish, which was bid on and purchased by the Taipei-based restaurant chain Mitsui Food and Beverage Enterprise Group, weighed in at just over 661 lbs. –that’s about $90 per pound. The Mitsui Group Chairman Huang Yi-jui also donated approximately $13,440 to ocean rescue efforts, as well. The Pingtun County Government will kick off its annual Bluefin Tuna Tourism Festival on May 4, which will run until late June.
