The Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Blog posted a phenomenal story by Bill Horn today about the decline of bonefish populations in the Florida Keys. Horn is the author of Seasons on the Flats: An Angler’s Year in the Florida Keys and has served as assistant secretary of the Interior for Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, chairman of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences environmental board. Horn’s report first appeared in The Angling Report and was then reprinted today in The Bonefish & Tarpon Trust Blog.
The remarkable article traces the history of Florida Keys bonefishing and the impact of various Florida development initiatives and poor environmental practices have led to population declines. The article is rich with data, research, and experience. No matter you particular interest in saltwater fishing, we urge you to read this landmark piece; it is well worth it.
Thanks to the BTT for reprinting Horn’s article and for the great work they do for bonefish, permit, and tarpon conservation.
