We were talking with some friends in Wrightsville Beach, NC today who are conveying some rather intriguing news about southern North Carolina fishing as December heads into its final days. It is, indeed cold in NC, but not as cold as it could be. It’ll be in the mid 50s today, and perhaps up into the low 70s by the weekend. The water has been clear and the water temperature has been hovering around the 57 degree mark, and the trout and redfish have been putting on a show.
Anglers are finding large schools of reds sunning in shallow waters, and the fish seem to be moving together into larger schools as they do during the colder months. They also seem to be hungry, hitting just about anything thrown at them. The clear water and large schools makes sight casting a good option this time of year. If usual patterns hold and as water temperatures continue to drop, these big schools of reds should keep things pretty interesting through January and into February.
Keep in mind that as the water gets colder, the fish will try to conserve energy, so you may want to slow your retrieves down a little to encourage the bite. Given the clarity of the water, focus lure selection on lighter colors like whites and chartreuse. Trout have been hitting soft body plastics while the reds haven’t been too discriminating, so throw your favorites and enjoy some amazing winter fishing.
