Saltwater Nation anglers from North Carolina to both Florida coasts are reporting some great wintertime redfishing. In North Carolina and South Carolina, were getting reports of big winter time schools, some 300-400 fish schools. In Florida, we’re hearing about big reds in Mosquito Lagoon and Tampa Bay, as well as in the mouths of Gulf Coast rivers. There’s no doubt about it, there’s some great redfishing available right now.
If you’re going to go chase reds, we want to share a little conventional wisdom about winter time redfishing: slow the hell down. In the colder water, animals try to conserve their energy, particularly animals that are not able to self-regulate their own body temperatures–like redfish. Thus, while reds are actively feeding all along the coast, they are being less aggressive about it than in warmer months. No matter the bait or lure you’re using, slow your retrieves down in the cooler water. Slow retrieves will increase your possibility of a strike.
