For those of you lucky enough to be fishing in New Zealand waters around Auckland, Cuvier, Island and down to Tauranga, the word is that there are still plenty of snapper around. The problem is that snapper are in the middle of their annual spawn, and spawning fish are often a bit finicky about eating. However, as fish finish their spawn, they tend to be hungry, seeking food to replenish energy after the spawn. So, the fish are there, but the trick is finding post-spawn feeders. You may even find a few snapper inside of the harbors.
We’re also hearing about albacore tuna offshore west of the island, and one or two reports of bigeye tuna, as well. Keep an eye out for dolphin, birds, and bait pods to locate tuna.
Keep in mind, too, that this time of year as you’re moving in and out of the harbors toward offshore spots, be sure to slow down as you pass markers, buoys, wharf pilings, and other structure to slowly pull a jig or soft bodied lure past the structure. There’s always a good chance that there will be kingfish and trevally hanging around structure.
