Popular Science has posted an interesting article about research conducted by the Monerey Bay Aquarium that reports that researches at MBA have developed a method for examining DNA found in small quantities of water to determine what fish and how many of each species inhabit local waters.

The research is the first to develop a methodology for population counting other than physical counts.
