Texas Parks Tackle Loaner Program

Saltwater Nation: Texas

Saltwater Nation: Texas

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has initiated a great new Angler Education Tackle Loaner Program.

This program loans fishing equipment just like a library loans books. Individuals can borrow rods, reels and tackle boxes with hooks, sinkers and bobbers for up to 7 days of fishing. All you need to do is go to a Loaner Site, fill out a loaner survey and form, and go fishing.

Some locations may require a deposit, and most, because they are state parks, require park admission. The equipment must be returned within 7 days of check-out. If the Tackle Loaner site is a state park, the equipment must be used in the state park. Late fees may apply and replacement cost of lost or damaged equipment may be charged. Keep in mind, too, the program doesn’t provide bait.

In addition to tackle, the park Rangers will provide hands-on lessons for using the tackle, and quite often will be on hand to help with tangles and such. Rangers are so cool.

While many of the Loaner Sites are located in State Parks built around rivers and lakes, there are a few, like Goose Island State Park, that are built around saltwater environments. You can find a complete list of Loaner Sites here.
