There’s no doubt that we love technology, especially really cool cutting-edge, fishing-related technology. So when Cameron Beccario, creator of earth.nullschool.net the interactive global wind map, released an interactive map of Earth’s ocean currents, we had to check it out and share it with the Saltwater Nation.
The map uses near real-time data to depict current currents. Beccario uses data compiled by NOAA’s Global Forecast System to update wind pattern information every three hours and Earth & Space Research’s OSCAR (Ocean Surface Current Analyses Real-time) data to update ocean current patterns every five days.
What’s great about the Beccario map, when compared with other maps, like NASA’s Perpetual Ocean video (also here and here), is that the Beccario map uses current data. The NASA video map only depicts a loop of currents taken from satellite imagery between June, 2005 and December, 2007.
So, if you haven’t already clicked the link above, here it is again. Go watch the water. It’s awesome.
