Man Catches Marlin(?) with Bare Hands

Haveeru Online, an online news source out of the Maldives, is reporting today that 29-year-old Ali Asif has caught a “huge marlin” at Raalhuganda with his bare hands.

According to the story, Asif was walking home from a restaurant when he spotted the fish and decided to jump in after it.

“People were there already. I gave them my phone and stuff and jumped in. Some people warned that I might get stabbed by its spear”, said Asif, who is a professional diver.

Asif said that he spotted the eight-foot long fish at the point where the waves broke and that it took him about 15 minutes to get the marlin to shore.

“I first got hold of its gill plate. Then when the waves came and the water level rose, the marlin would run off with me. I tried to stab it in the neck with a sharp stick a friend handed me, but could not do it. So I just grabbed onto its neck and came ashore”, recounts Asif.

Haveeru included four images with the story, and we’ve reprinted them here, because, while the story is pretty amazing, we’re not sure the fish in question is actually a marlin. The pictures don’t provide a great view of the fish, but it looks like a broadbill swordfish to us, and given that swords are definitely found in Maldives waters, we’re leaning to a swordfish, not a marlin. What do you think?

FISH ON!
