This past week, the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council voted to approve an extended winter flounder season to run from March 1 until December 31. The approval paralleled an earlier approval by the the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission which set its specifications for winter flounder with a season from March 1 to December 31 for the Southern New England and Mid-Atlantic stock.
While the NJ Marine Fisheries Council has approved the measure, it cannot go into effect until the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection approves the change and and signs the new rule into law.
It is unclear whether or not that approval will happen before the previously set winter flounder season begins on March 23.
Winter flounder size and bag limit will remain at two fish at 12 inches.
