William “Wally” Carmichael of Dargaville and Waihi Beach, New Zealand, was fishing with his son off of Doubtless Bay last week when he hooked and landed a 201-pound striped marlin. The 91-and-a-half-year-old was fishing with Captain Rob Obren of Opua about 135 miles off of Berghan Point when he hooked the marlin. Carmichael fought the fish for about 35 minutes.
This wasn’t Carmichael’s first marlin. He landed a 280-pound blue marlin twenty years prior–when he was a mere 70 years old. “That was when I was a young chap,” Carmichael said.
