“Extinct” Atlantic Sturgeon Washes Ashore

An Atlantic sturgeon, a species thought to be extinct within the state of Connecticut, washed up upon the shore of the Connecticut River, 8 miles from the mouth of Long Island Sound.

The sturgeon measured about 7 feet long, was approximated at 12 years old, and was carrying eggs even though it was deemed to still be a juvenile. A cause of death was undetermined. Although it might be a member of a non-native population of sturgeon, scientists hope that it may be a sign that Atlantic sturgeon may not quite be extinct within the state’s waters.
