We’re getting word from Saltwater Nation anglers fishing SoCal out of Santa Cruz that the white sea bass bite is on, with lots of nice fish in the 30-60 lb range. If you’re headed out to the Channel Islands, check out Chinese Harbor where many bigger fish have been taken.
Keep in mind that WSB can be picky about feeding times. Look for fish around kelp beds (not necessarily in the kelp, but nearby). As is usually the case, live squid is WSB candy. In a pinch, frozen squid or live sardines, anchovies, or mackerel can draw the bite. Rig 20-30 lb test line with 2/0 hook and a small sliding egg sinker (depending upon current, 1/2 to 3/4 oz will be sufficient).
As the water warms, Calico Bass will continue to move into the region, as well. Target calicoes with plastic swim baits–you may pick up a WSB or two with these, as well.
