It’s halibut time in Alaska, and pound for pound this is some incredible fishing. We’re getting reports from Saltwater Nation anglers in Seward, Whittier, and Homer that halibut catches are increasing and that there’s no better time to get out and get those freezers stocked.

There’s a 199-pound halibut occupying the leader board of this year’s Homer Jackpot Derby. That fish was taken on June 6 by Molly Malthby. But that spot will likely be overtaken soon, as more big fish are being caught each day. Keep in mind, too, that if you’re in Homer the “Fishin’ Hole” ought to be lighting up pretty soon, too. We’ve heard that a few kings have been showing up in the officially named Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon (it’ll always be the Fishin’ Hole to us).

Friends in Seward are reporting that both halibut and rockfish have been abundant. A good number of 60-pound-plus fish have been taken, and there have been a few barn doors reported, as well. We spoke with one Saltwater Nation angler we fish with who recommends looking east of Seward between Cape Junket and Montague Island in water ranging from 150 to 200 feet deep. Keep in mind, too, that the red salmon are still moving in the north end of the bay, as well.

Whittier is also seeing great catches of halibut this season, including several 100-pound-plus fish. The kings are also still hitting as are rockfish and yelloweye.

FISH ON!
