The Ride the Bull kayak fishing tournament is set for two weeks from now–August 15-16–and you better believe that it’s going to be big.
Last year’s tournament drew 488 anglers to the tournament, setting a new record as the largest kayak fishing tournament ever held. But Tournament Director Danny Wray expects about 300 more kayakers to show up for this year’s tournament. Wray explained to a local newspaper that he’s told tournament caterers to plan for about 700. If he gets even close to that turnout, Ride the Bull V will have established the tournament as a powerhouse in fishing tournaments–and only after 5 years. Wray says that 400 anglers have already pre-registered for the event, so chances are he’s going to make his prediction. Ride the Bull I attracted 75 anglers. That’s an amazing growth rate for a five-year-old tournament.
Ride the Bull is held at Caminada Pass on the south end of Grand Isle, Louisiana, where anglers target big bull reds. The event will start Friday, August 15 with dinner and a film festival. The on Saturday, August 16, anglers will hit the water from 7:15 am until 3:00 pm. The $65 early entry fee includes a t-shirt, safety vest, ditty bag, Friday’s dinner and lunch on Saturday.
Unlike many kayak tournaments, the Ride the Bull tournament does not require anglers to bring their fish to weigh in. Instead, anglers fish the area around Caminada pass and when they hook up, a chase boat will attend to them, net the fish, take this fish back in to the tournament launch site, tag the fish, weigh it, and release it.
