New Product Introduction

Product Introduction: Flying Fisherman Passport Travel Rods

If you’re like us, you probably associate Flying Fisherman with their affordable sunglass line. However, the company unveiled a new series of Passport Travel Rods at ICAST which we can’t wait to test out in the field.

Passport Travel Rods come in two versions, spinning and fly.

The rod series was designed by Juan Gozio and Captain Randy Towe and look beautiful on first inspection (as well as a second inspection). The blanks feature “extraordinary high Modulus / high strain Japanese graphite with nano resin,” and are equipped with Portuguese cork handles and FUJI and TX SIC guides. The rods feature a glossy black finish with a classy silver trim.

What really makes these travel rods stand out, however, is the case. Each rod comes in a black velvet bag, but the rods can also be put into a cordura case that can fit inside most standard luggage. The case can be used with foam inserts with slots for one rod per side, or the foam may be removed allowing as many as 12 rods (in their velvet bags) to fit within a single case. Alternatively, one side may be used for rods, and the other side for reels or other gear.

The spinning rods are all 3 piece, 7 feet long, in three different weights (8-14 lbs, 10-17 lbs, and 12-25 lbs).

The fly rods are all 4 piece, 9 feet long, also in three different weights (#6, #8, #10).

We think that the rod weights should be adequate for a majority of inshore (and some offshore) species that the traveling angler might expect to target, such as redfish, trout, bonefish, permit, snook, etc. While we generally like at least a #12 fly rod for tarpon, the #10 fly rod (and 12-25 lbs spinner) should be enough for smaller fish.

Since we travel to a lot of different locations to fish, we’re excited about this series and hope to test them out and have a video Gear Review soon.
