In an era when super coolers are rapidly taking over the market from conventional coolers, it only makes sense that someone develop a more effective coolant system for the new class of coolers. Arctic Ice has done exactly that, offering a rugged, reusable ice pack that maintains lower temperatures for longer time than traditional ice or even synthetic “blue” ice products.
Designed as cooler inserts, Arctic ice uses an active ingredient called PureTemp, a non-toxic, biodegradable phase-change material (PCM) derived from plants. The PCM works by absorbing more heat as it reaches its melting point slowing its own warming process. In doing so, the cooler pack maintains a specific temperature until the entire cooler pack thaws.
The Arctic Ice packs come in two versions: The Alaskan series which freezes at 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit and the Tundra series which freezes at 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
Arctic Ice has conducted a number of tests comparing their products with both frozen water and Blue ice packs. In all of the tests, Arctic Ice packs kept cooled items colder longer. For example, in one controlled temperature test, a large Arctic Ice Alaskan 2.5-pound pack retained the temperature of six 20-ounce bottles of water chilled below 43 degrees Fahrenheit for 11.5 hours in a mid-sized cooler when external ambient temperatures were recorded to be between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. In that same test, the Arctic Ice lasted 64 percent longer than other PCM 2.5 packs, 64 percent longer than traditional frozen water ice packs, and more than three times as long as blue ice packs.
In addition to the Alaskan series and the Tundra series, Arctic ice also produces the Chillin Brew series of ice packs designed to keep beer at optimal drinking temperatures for longer periods of time without the mess of frozen water ice.
One of the things we like about all of these ice packs is their deign to fit in the new super coolers as dividers rather than only laying flat in the cooler.
