The UK newspaper The Telegraph and the US newspaper Daily News are reporting that German angler Michael Eisele caught a record breaking 103 pound Atlantic cod in the Breivikfjord near Hammerfest, northern Norway on April 28, 2013.
Eisele is waiting for confirmation from the International Game Fish Association that the fish overtakes (“destroys” or “humiliates” might be more appropriate words) the previous world record set in 1969 by Alphonse Bielevich of Hampton, New Hampshire of a 98 pound, 12 ounce Atlantic cod. Bielevich’s fish was taken off of the New Hampshire coast.According to The Telegraph, historical records show that fish of this size used to be common in these waters, but that fish between 24 and 33 pounds (fish this size are usually about 10 years old) are now more common.
Eisele has donated the record cod to the Norwegian Fisheries Museum in Bergen.
