On March 6, 2014, Orlando-based fishing guide Ward Michaels caught a 59 1/2-pound Pacific black snook in Puerto Quepos in Costa Rica. This week, the IGFA certified that catch as the new all-tackle world record.

The previous record for Pacific snook was 57 pounds 12 ounces and was set in 1991 in Costa Rica.

Michaels was fishing a 7-foot, medium/heavy St. Croix rod and a Shimano Calcutta 400 loaded with 65-pound Sufix line. The fish hit a live sardine.

The pacific snook is the largest of the snook varieties. There are six species of snook found in Pacific waters; there are six other species found in Atlantic waters. None of the species can be found in both the Atlantic and the Pacific.

FISH ON!
