St. James Boatworks’ SJ-20 Express

Sometimes a new product shows up on the market that just demands our attention; other times, the very philosophy behind a company draws our consideration. In the case of St. James Boatworks, both their boat designs and company philosophies have our attention.

As a company, St. James Boatworks, like their namesake St. James, strives to help those in need, and in conjunction with a non-profit organization, the company provides food and shelter for widows and orphans throughout the Caribbean. That’s the exact kind of humanitarian ethos we appreciate in a company.

But, if the altruism isn’t enough to get your attention, then the sheer beauty and design details of the St. James Boatworks’ all-new SJ-20 is sure to draw the gaze of any boat lover and near-shore angler.

.

The SJ-20 is a hybrid skiff based on Carolina maritime designs, and has been designed for the sole purpose of shallow water angling. But, unlike many other shallow water skiffs, the SJ-20 incorporates a level of luxury that demands that this skiff be thought of as a shallow water yacht.

There’s no doubt that the hull design of this skiff is beautiful, her curves are well-defined and distinct. The prominent Carolina flair adds to a comfortably dry ride and increases buoyancy in rough waters. The SJ-20’s tumblehome adds to hull integrity and diminishes lateral drag when poling. The integrated keel adds to tracking stability when poling and also contributes to a reduction in wind sensitivity. Likewise, the strong forefoot helps prevent bow drift in a strong breeze and can take on big head seas when things get rough.

.

The SJ-20 Express model has a large forward casting deck that can easily accommodate three anglers. It also has a convertible rumble seat with with an insulated cooler below. There’s also an additional live bait well with a clear wall to maintain ambient light in the well equivalent to that outside the well in order to reduce bait shock. The aft casting deck also has a 23-gallon release well and two lockable rod compartments that can hold up to 16 twelve-foot fly rods. The cockpit command center has a beautiful teak helm pod with a retractable electronics hatch.

.

The SJ-20 Center Console has an open, unobstructed cockpit. The forward casting deck is designed to accommodate two anglers. The boat has ample dry storage. The forward 20-gallon live well is conveniently located for angler access on the bow, and there is a 23-gallon aft bait well, too, in addition to two large storage compartments. The console houses a teak help pod with a retractable electronics hatch and a 17-gallon circular release well.

The hull design also contributes to the boat’s speediness. The SJ-20 is capable of running through chop and sliding across glass. The boat designed for shallow water performance and open water  tracking.
