Eco-Business.com, Asia Pacific’s sustainable business community online resource, reports today that a University of Hong Kong global  study has found that one in ten species of grouper are currently at risk of extinction and that most are being served in restaurants in Hong Kong.

The study examined all 163 grouper species known in the world and identified 20 as threatened and 22 others as near-threatened.

The study found six species native to Hong Kong waters being sold in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong grouper (Epinephelus akaara), longtooth grouper (Epinephelus longispinis), the giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus), humpback grouper (Chromileptes altivelis), and two other threatened species. In addition, the popular leopard coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus), identified as near-threatened, is also found in Hong Kong markets as it is traditionally served at banquets.

According to the UHK study, roughly 3.6 million grouper a year are consumed in Hong Kong; that’s about 1/5 of all of the grouper sold in China.
