The Fiji Times Online is reporting today that Chinese tuna boat operators are targeting sharks as a primary fishery. Speaking with Kaiafa Ledua, a Fijian who worked aboard a Chinese tuna boat for six years. According to Ledua, fishermen would receive triple pay for each shark they brought in compared with the payment for a single tuna. Ledua explains, too, that sharks are valued so highly that tuna boats often use A-grade tuna meat to bait sharks. You can link to the full article here.
