Rhode Island’s Black Sea Bass Season opened last week, and Saltwater Nation anglers are letting us know that the bite is on.
Remember, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has adjusted the regulations for black sea bass this year. The summer season will remain open until August 31, 2013, but keep in mind that this year’s supper bag limit is 3 fish per person per day. This is a big reduction from last year’s 15 fish limit. Limits during the winter season, which is open from September 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013, will increase to 7 fish per person per day.
We’re hearing from Saltwater Nation anglers that good catches of black sea bass are coming from Grace’s Cove down to Stevens Cove. Most fish are being taken in 40 to 50 feet of water.
We’re also hearing good things about striped bass being caught from the beach at West Beach, where there have been good numbers of sand eels in the water. Those fishing from boats have also reported bigger stripers around the south side of the island in deep water. Surfcasters are also reporting good catches of fluke from Coast Guard Beach using squid, and boaters are reporting fluke from just outside of the harbor.
