Recreational harvest and commercial harvest for grey triggerfish and greater amberjack will reopen in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, August 1, 2013 in Gulf State and federal waters.

The gray triggerfish season closed on June 10 this year in accord with new fisheries management measures. The season will close June 1, 2014, as well. Greater Amberjack harvest season will also close June 1, 2014.

The new recreational bag limit is two fish per person, per day; the commercial limit is 12 fish per trip. The minimum size limit for gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico state and federal waters is 14 inches fork length, which is measured from the tip of the fish’s closed mouth to the center of the fork in the tail. The minimum size limit in Atlantic state waters is 12 inches fork length.

Greater amberjack must be at least 30 inches fork length in Gulf of Mexico state and federal waters; they must be at least 28 inches fork length in Atlantic state waters. Recreational bag limits for greater amberjack are set at one fish per person, per day.

Remember:  all reef-fish gear rules must be accounted for when fishing for gray triggerfish and greater amberjack in Gulf waters, including using circle hooks and having a dehooking device and a venting tool on board your boat.
