If you know about the Fishing Hole in Homer, Alaska, then you know that this is the time of the year when we are all waiting for the silver run to hit the Hole. The silver haven’t run yet, but Saltwater Nation Anglers are letting us know that there have been a few silvers hanging around outside the lagoon, but the few anglers out there are working hard to get them to hit.

If you’re waiting for the chaos of the run, you may want to try flipping some small herring outside the lagoon. Or, try a few salmon eggs at sunrise or sunset, but don’t overload your hook. There may be a few in the Hole during these times as well, especially during high tides. And, don’t be surprised if you pick up a few scattered Dollies outside the lagoon, as well.

For those of you who don’t know the Fishing Hole, or more officially, the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon on Homer Spit, you really should check out this run at least once. Sure, it’s chaos, but it’s the kind of chaos the saltwater Nation thrives on.

Named for now retired Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist, Nick Dudiak, the man-made lagoon provides easy-access angling from mid-May to mid-September. The Hole offers both king salmon fishing and silver salmon fishing, including  an early run of silvers starting in mid-July. There are few places in Southcentral that see this kind of an early run. 15-20 pound kings can be taken from about mid-May until the end of June.

Keep in mind that this Saturday, August 3, from 12:01 pm until midnight, part of the Fishing Hole will be restricted to youth-only fishing.  Only kids 15-years-old and younger will be permitted to fish in the restricted areas. Fish and Game personnel will be on hand from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm to assist young anglers.

Rumor has it, too, that the crew over at the Salty Dawg will be available to fulfill your post-salmon needs.
