Sailfish in Cape Cod Canal?

video2

Rumors are coming in from Cape Cod that someone caught a sailfish in the Cape Cod Canal on Tuesday. The video embedded here was posted to YouTube today by “plugho” and seems to testify to the fact that a sail was taken in the Canal. Of course, the video does have the feel of a big foot sighting video or Blair Witch Project, so it may not stand as evidence, but it’s making believers out of us. According to the YouTube video information, the angler is Justin Sprague.

Part of what makes us believers is that taking a sailfish inside the Canal is completely plausible this time of year. The Canal is 32 feet deep at mean low tide and seven miles long. Given that whales, tuna, and other large species use the canal to move between Cape Cod bay and the Atlantic, it seems reasonable to assume a sailfish would use the canal as well. Likewise, the water temperatures in the Canal were around 70 degrees on Tuesday, well within the sailfish’s range of tolerance.

UPDATE:

We’ve just seen today’s post on On The Water: The Angler’s Guide which seems to confirm Sprague’s sailfish catch, including this picture:
