German fisherman Marco Liebenow and his record-setting 513-pound Atlantic halibut

German angler Marco Liebenow has landed a 513-pound Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) that is certain to shatter the current International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world record by more than 94 pounds. Caught out of Kjollefjord, Norway, the fish was more than nine-feet long and was too big to be hauled on to the boat. Instead, Liebenow and the crew tied a rope to the fish’s tail and towed it to shore. It then took a crane to lift the fish from the water.

The previous Atlantic halibut world record stood at 418 pounds since 2004.

A fish that size would require a tremendous amount of batter, but the story is that Liebenow donated the prize halibut to a local fish dealer.

FISH ON!
