We’re hearing from Saltwater Nation Anglers along the southern parts of North Carolina that king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) action has been great this past week and looks to be hot over the labor day weekend. We’ve heard from a number of anglers who have been catching kings from area piers. Likewise, we’re hearing about kings being taken from anywhere just off the beach to as far out as 20 miles, particularly in ranges of 60-100 feet of depth. Some anglers are also reporting finding amberjack (Seriola dumerili), little tuny/false albacore (Euthynnus alletteratus), and whaoo (Acanthocybium solandri) in with the kings.
The offshore kings have been actively taking trolled cigar minnows and ballyhoo and while light lining live baits. Kings taken from piers are being caught on pin rigs. make sure to check with individual piers regarding charges for running king rigs and pier rules regarding numbers of rods/rigs an individual angler may use at a time.
