Canada International Tuna Cup Challenge

The 2013 Canada Tuna Cup Challenge kicks off this weekend on the southern tip of Prince Edward Island. The tournament will run Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and will include more than 150 anglers from around the world fishing for 25 teams.

The tournament has been run since 1967, though tuna catches were slim in the 1980s and early 1990s. In fact from 1990-1994 only one fish was brought to scale. Since 2009, however, the tournament has been strictly catch-and-release.

This year’s fishing should be remarkable as the conditions appear to be perfect. There are large numbers of herring and squid in the area, and anglers fishing the area these past few weeks have been reporting large numbers of fish, many over 500 pounds and several Grander Giant Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus).

FISH ON!
