3 News in New Zealand is reporting that a record setting giant tuna was caught today off of the West Coast of New Zealand. The fish, which was taken to a port in Greymouth, weighed in at 352.5 kilograms, about 776 pounds. Channel 3 is claiming the fish is the largest fish ever to be caught on rod and reel, a claim we’re having a bit of trouble accepting given that in 1953 Lou Marron set a world record with a 1,182 pound swordfish taken off of Iquique, Chile (it’s hanging in the IGFA museum), in 1992 Paulo Amorim landed a 1,402 pound Atlantic Blue Marlin off of Vitoria, Brazil, and in 1979 Ken Fraser landed a 1,496 pound Atlantic Bluefin Tuna in Aulds Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada. This doesn’t even begin to account for all of the grander marlin and tuna other anglers have taken.
Nonetheless, Kevin Baker’s NZ tuna is pretty impressive and the video of the fish is worth checking out here. And it’s also worth taking a look at Ken Fraser’s fish, because…whoa.
