In a press release today, the Hong Kong government announced that it would no longer serve shark fin and bluefin tuna at official functions. A press release titled “Gov’t Adopts ‘Green’ Menus,” announces:
“The Government has pledged to adopt sustainability-conscious food consumption during official entertainment functions.
No shark fin, bluefin tuna or black moss will be on the menu at official entertainment functions. The items have aroused international and local concern because they are either captured or harvested in ecologically unfriendly or unsustainable ways, or cause other conservation concerns.
The Environment Bureau has issued internal guidelines, and the Government will update and add to the list of items from time to time.
Government bureaus and departments will notify hosts in advance that officials will not consume shark fin, bluefin tuna, black moss and related food items. They will also encourage public organisations funded by the Government to adopt similar practices.”
