Bloomberg news service is reporting today that research company Statistical Surveys, Inc. has identified that powerboat purchases in the U.S. rose 18.9% between July 2012 and July 2013.

Much of this increase can be attributed to an increase in sales of vessels under 30 feet in length. In this category of boats, sales have increased 13% since 2010, while sales of larger boats have increased 9.3%. This increase began to develop after the 18-month recession that ended in June, 2009.

According to the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association (NMMA), there is a high correlation between boat purchases and consumer confidence and gross domestic product. Given that Federal Reserve officials predict that the GDP will continue to increase, NMMA officials are also predicting an increase and acceleration in boat sales, though they admit that trends have been toward smaller boats and used boats.
