So the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council did not give us the year-round red snapper fishery that many thought the recreational fishing community deserved. It did, however, grant three red snapper weekends:
1: Friday, July 11 – Monday July 14
2: Friday, July 18 – Monday July 21
3. Friday, July 25 – Sunday, July 27
That puts us right at half way through the allocated mini-seasons, and reports throughout the red snapper nation have been of good catches.
Of course, given the less-than-definitive data used to close the red snapper fishery to recreational anglers for the last 2 1/2 years, many anglers are pointing to the good catches of this year to confirm what many have been arguing all along: there is strong evidence that the red snapper fishery continues to improve and the harvest limits for recreational fishermen needs to be increased.
No matter the larger debate and the legitimacy of any cited data and evidence, the fact is that there are very limited opportunities for recreational fishermen to get out and take home red snapper, so don’t let the chances pass you by this year.
