Fishnewseu.com, a seafood industry news provider out of Scotland, posted a story today about a new campaign by the seafood industry called “Tweets form the Deep” to educate the public about what the commercial fishing life is really like.
As fisherman David Warwick explains to Fishnewseu.com, “Men risk their lives putting food on people’s plates, but often in return are pilloried in the newspapers as heartless sea barons, scooping up vast quantities of fish indiscriminately…. Hopefully this event will show the British people that we’re actually just men earning a living and doing so in a sustainable and considerate way.”
Apparently, for the twitter campaign, fishermen like Warwick tweet about their time on the water, offering commentary and insight into the commercial fishing world.
We hope that those who follow the Tweet from the Deep campaign on Twitter will recognize this campaign for what it is: an attempt to appeal to readers’ emotions by asking them to connect with hard-working individuals rather than looking closely at the larger institutional structures and practices of the commercial seafood industry. It is rather suspect to educate the world about commercial fishing by showing the world the common man without exposing the system to which he contributes.
